The results and outlook of the marco polo programme

16.05.2013 |

On May 14th 2013 the European Commission adopted a Communication on the Marco Polo Programme (2003-2013).

This programme helps companies introduce transport services that aid in the shift of freight off roads and onto more environmentally sound modes like short-sea shipping, rail and inland waterways.

172 grants have been awarded between 2003 and 2012, resulting in the funding assistance of over 650 companies.

The programme generated around EUR 434 million in environmental benefits, reducing 21.9 billion tonne-kilometers of freight off European roads.

The Communication also presents the Commission´s intentions in regard to the next step beyond the current multiannual financial framework.
