Thematic Workshops 2013

During the 2nd half of 2013, TRANSFORuM organised four separate Thematic Workshops, by each thematic White Paper goal, on good practice under the heading "Transformation is possible!" The purpose of these events was to identify stakeholder needs towards roadmaps, recommendations and the strategic outlook, which are the three main outputs to be developed by TRANSFORuM. In order to ensure practical relevance (as perceived by TRANSFORuM’s target group) we invited 10 stakeholders per theme to a certain location where interesting practice results could be experienced first-hand.

  • The first Thematic Workshop on Urban Mobility was held in Oslo, Norway on 24-25 October 2013. Norway and specifically the Oslo region are well known for their achievements in supporting alternative fuels and particularly electric mobility. Workshop participants visited relevant sites where they could get in touch with the reality of alternative mobility on Oslo’s streets, and meet a number of people that are responsible for ongoing clean transport-related projects in the city and surrounding areas. The main purpose of the event, however, was to listen to and learn from the stakeholders about the best ways to implement the White Paper goals. TRANSFORuM sent out a briefing paper beforehand, which also contains information about the workshop agenda and participants. You can also access a summary of the event and of course the workshop minutes.
  • The first Thematic Workshop on ITS took place in Reading, England on 11-12 November 2013. Reading, a member of the Co-Cities project, as well as London, with its comprehensive Oyster system, offer a range of innovative solutions of integrated traveller information systems. They also are good examples of integrated tariff and ticketing schemes, which participants were given the opportunity to experience during the site visit. The workshop briefing paper is publicly available and so are the workshop minutes. For a brief summary of the event please visit the Rupprecht Consult website.
  • The first Thematic Workshop on Highspeed Rail was held in Lyon, France on 21-22 November 2013. France has been a pioneer of building a comprehensive network of highspeed TGV rail lines which is still being expanded and Lyon is an important node in this network. In addition to the workshop discussions, participants had the opportunity to visit a TGV maintenance centre. Further information on workshop logistics as well as, most importantly, thematic background information is available in the workshop briefing paper. For a brief summary of the event visit the Rupprecht Consult website. The workshop minutes are also available.
  • The first Thematic Workshop on Freight was held in Basel, Switzerland on 25-26 November 2013. The Basel port is not only of great importance for the Swiss economy in general, but it is an excellent example of linking inland shipping, rail freight and road freight. Workshop participants were given the opportunity to visit Innovatrain, a novel freight terminal close to Basel where transshipment between road and rail freight is handled in a very efficient way. The briefing paper contains  further information about the workshop logistics, structure and content. A brief summary of the workshop can be found on the Rupprech Consult website and the workshop minutes are available here.
